Second Saturdays Are Free at the Custom House Museum

Bring the Whole Family to Custom House Museum in Clarksville TN

Dormers and Terra cotta ornaments on Custom House MuseumEvery month on the second Saturday there is free admission for the attendees at Custom House Museum. I recommend going any day of the week but free is good, very good. Spend the day or just a few hours seeing the exhibits, the permanent ones and temporary exhibits.

Check the schedule here to see what is being featured now at the Museum.

The architecture is stunning and well worth spending time outside the building. makes this building Clarksville's most interesting. The Custom House dates back to 1897. To see the full history click here. The oldest portion of the building was designed to be used as a Federal Post Office for the tobacco businesses of Clarksville. Tobacco was a big trading commodity. You will see the story about the postmaster's office when you visit the main floor.

The Museum is located on the corner of Commerce and Second St.with lots of free parking. Walk around downtown while you are there. You will be impressed.

There are 20 dormers on the roof, an ornate tower in the middle and large copper eagles at each corner. If you are superstitious no worries because the gargoyles are warding off bad spirits by standing guard over the courtyard looking down from the roof.

The History of the Customs House in Clarksville

The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.

Hours of operation are 10am to 5pm Tuesday through Saturday and 1-5pm on Sundays. Stop in at the  gift store that features handcrafted pieces from local artists.
