One of the Biggest Lessons Learned in Real Estate

You Will See That It Works, Too

Ask for the businessWith many years behind me in the real estate business, I still learn new things every day. However there is one practice that really works and it takes repeating it over and over again to prove it. It is asking for the business. Hearing a "No" answer is not reason enough to not ask again.

Some of what we do works immediately and we know we have hit pay-dirt with our newly discovered technique. Other skills take practice and tweaking and repeating. Asking for the business is one of those.

Contact methods have changed over the years with huge changes in technology being thrust upon us. In real estate we meet people every day either through our social media outlets, in person, on the phone or through email. People get to know us through our websites and the referrals of friends and family. We may make an impression but we still need to ask for the business and not take it for granted.

With so many real estate agents vying for the business how do we set ourselves apart? How do we get people to do business with us? We ask, we ask and we ask. People don't want to be taken for granted and want to be asked for their business. A no answer doesn't mean never, it  means not now.

We may assume we will be remembered and called when the need for real estate services arises. Chances are it will not happen. We have to make it clear that we want the business, we want their business. To do that we have to tell them we want their business and ask for it. One time may not be enough, 5 times may not work but the 8th or 10th time could be the magic number. The more we ask the more likely we are to get it.

Bottom line, people want to know we want their business. Showing sincere interest in them and their situation, caring and asking for the business will greatly increase the chances you will get business.

I would really like to have the opportunity to work with you if you decide to sell. May I continue to stay in touch?

Don't give up. Keep asking and staying in touch. Ask for the business over and over. You might just get the business because of your tenacity and to shut you up (only half kidding, on that one).

This is one of the biggest lessons learned in real estate. Learn it early and your success will come sooner.
