Do You Know Who Your Neighbors Are?

Many of Us Don't Know Their Names and Only Recognize The Vehicles They Drive

It's National Good Neighbor Day
Coming up on September 28 is National Good Neighbor Day. The busy lives we lead keep us from getting to know our neighbors like we should. In this day and time it is more important than ever to learn who your neighbors are and let them know you.

Not all neighbors are good neighbors and that is a fact of life. This day is set aside to get to know your neighbors and do something nice for them. You never know when you may need to call on a neighbor for help or they may need to call on you.

For security reasons it is a good idea to know their names and even have their phone numbers even if you never plan to socialize with them. If they don't want to be known then taht is good to know too. Keeping a look out is just smart this day and time.

This designated day was originally celebrated on the 4th Sunday in September. Presidents Nixon, Ford and Carter made proclamations celebrating it. In 2003, the Senate passed a resolution naming September 28th as National Good Neighbor Day

National Good Neighbor Day is a day to do a little something extra for your neighbor. Here are some suggestions of things you could do that would be neighborly:

Offer a smile or a friendly hello or wave.
Invite your neighbor over for a meal or snack.
Share a dessert with your neighbor.

Lend a helping hand especially if your neighbor lives alone or is elderly.
Go meet the neighbors you don't know and swap phone numbers.
Neighbors you do know, tell them you are there for them.

We can all learn to be better neighbors. National Good Neighbor Day is a good day to start.

Hi Debbie Reynolds - Thanks for highlighting this special day.

I have found personally and professionally that most of my clients know their neighbors well in Sedona. My husband and I know most of the neighbors who live in our community. Our HOA is active and holds "Mixers" at different times of the year.  HOA meetings and events are another perfect chance to meet your neighbors. Happy National Good Neighbor Day!

What a great idea for the senate to encourage us to get to know our neighbors!

Good Tuesday morning Debbie.  I had no idea there was a National Good Neighbor Day.  Yesterday we had several neighbors over for lunch and to catch up.  It made for a later night working night for me but worth spending time with good neighbors.

Hi Debbie Reynolds I grew up knowing all my neighbors, but now I only know them to see them. That's OK. THEY'RE BUSY JUST LIKE WE ARE.

Debbie, what a great day, I had no idea there was such a thing. Just marked it on my calendar. We have a pretty good group in the court I live on. Many of us have been there for a long time and we all do our best to keep an eye on each others homes and share shoveling duties during the winter.

Very good advice.  We should reach out and get to know who is living in our neighborhoods.

Hi Debbie, we should never wait for our neighbors to come to us, a quick hello to introduce ourselves to our neighbors is a great gesture. I only have three neighbors, all great ones too!

Knowing who your neighbors are is an excellent practice.  If for no other reason than security and safety reasons.  Mark

Hi Debbie - i know some but not all.  Too bad this isn't a weekend since most won't be around.

Thanks for writing this blog, Debbie. I didn't know that there was a National Good Neighbor Day, and a Senate resolution. In Tempe, we have a city-wide event called GAIN (Getting Arizona Involved in Neighborhoods) in October - neighbors from HOAs and neighborhood associations get together for a potluck, games or other activities. City officials visit the neighborhood parties, too.

Debbie - I didn't know the day existed, thanks! Funny re: knowing the cars neighbors drive - it's the only way my husband id's people in the neighborhood.

Hi Debbie - That's a good topic for a special day. We're lucky that our HOA sponsors well-attended picnics and holiday events - we know all of our close neighbors and most of the others in our 88 home subdivision.

Good evening Debbie.  It is true, it is important to know your neighbors because you never know when you will need each other.  Neighborhood associations are a wonderful way to integrate and build community.  I don't have that where I live currently and I actually regret that and will look for something like it in my next home.

Great day to celebrate our neighbors.  Thanks for letting us know that September 28th was set aside as National Good Neighbor Day Debbie Reynolds

There are only ten houses on my half mile road but we do look out for each other.

Very thoughtful Debbie. Our world is getting too impersonal these days.

Debbie I didn't know about this day set aside for Good Neighbors Day.  Pretty cool really.  I know some of our neighbors but so many just come and go so often and we never see them outside. I am grateful for our close neighbors as they are awesome and really good neighbors.

Sadly, I do know all of my neighbors.  I say sadly only because one of them has turned into a "material fact" that has to be disclosed to prospective buyers.

Patricia Kennedy that is part of knowing who your neighbors are. I would rather know that fact than not.

In my neighborhood in Oklahoma City it has 6 and 8 foot privacy fences and not much interaction. At our condo in Jupiter Florida everybody knows our name and wants to babysit our poodle.

Always good to know your neighbors, especially those who are seniors so you can keep an eye out for them. Good post.
