No Day is Exactly Like the Last
To share with new agents and those thinking of getting into the business of selling real estate, here is a glimpse of what to expect when you are starting you your real estate career. First, you need to know that you are the one in control of your time but you are not the boss. Your clients are the boss. You work for them and how your business grows and develops depends how well you serve them. They can make it easy or make it hard on building a business. Learning the secret of listening and relating to their needs is a lesson you want to learn very early. You have to be real and let them know you care.
Okay, back to a day in real estate. We only have so much time in every day so use that time wisely. I recommend you plan your day, work your plan but be flexible. You need a balance of scheduled activities and flex time to plug in a new buyer, a seller that decides to call at the last minute or something you want to do for yourself or personal development. New opportunities present themselves every day.
The day starts for me around 7:00 with coffee. I check my phone for texts and emails. I am ready to take calls for the day though I won't make any calls that early. I review my calendar and know what I have to do for the day. I also check into ActiveRain to see what's trending. After playing in the Rain for about 30 minutes I go exercise for another 30 minutes and watch the news channels.
I go to the office most days as I am one of those agents that goes to an office. This has been my routine for 30 something years and works well for me. However, I can work totally from home or in my car with all the systems I have in place. Technology is awesome and saves my time and maximizes my efficiency.
Any day consists of making phone calls, following up on leads, marketing of properties (I am primarily a listing agent), managing contracts to get them to closing, taking photos (I take photos wherever I go), checking on properties, working on getting new listings, showing properties and planning for the future. Each day is a different combination. You have to have regular activities and balance in your day but you must remain flexible.
Whatever I do, I am thinking about tomorrow, the next week and the following week. If I am not working on future business then I will soon be out of business. It will quickly dry up and go away. I try to be flexible and always reaching.
My work week also has committee meetings and participation in my local Board of Realtors. This can mean working on a task force, attending a luncheon or attending a broker open house. I like to support my fellow Realtors and have good working relations with agents in my community. This pays off in getting offers worked out.
At the end of the day, sometime around 6 or 7pm, I make it home and have dinner with my husband. After that I check in with my ActiveRain family and do some blogging and commenting.
Days are full, very full and fulfilling. When you are working hard and doing something you love, the days fly by. Each day has new possibilities so make sure you keep your eyes and ears open so you can be ready to take action and make the most of each opportunity.
Opportunities are plentiful but they will not wait on you, you have to be ready and reach for them. These opportunities will present themselves and that is why I put flex time into each day.
A typical day in real estate is not so typical. You have to be flexible and have balance in each day. Don't forget to schedule some time for you and your family.
