A Career Do-Over, Realizing a Dream
I am a firm believer it isn't over until it's over. My early years in real estate led me to be very active in my local Realtor® Association. I served on almost every committee, served the chairman position of several committees, sat on task forces and even was a Director on the Board more than once. I was set on course to be President but that didn't happen.
I chose to focus on building a real estate company and pretty much stopped serving and attending events except what was mandatory to maintain my business and license I left the Association to others to run and basically became disinterested. I was not forgotten though.
After an absence of almost 10 years, I was asked to serve on the building committee for our new Association building. I agreed and enjoyed it. I then was asked if I would run for Treasurer of the Association. I did and was elected twice. In my mind I knew it was time to step up and serve as President and fulfill that dream. I had the experience, knew the members and had ideas to better the Association. I felt like I have something to give. I ran for office and was elected.
In 2 weeks I will be sworn in as President of Clarksville Association of Realtors®. I am so looking forward to giving back to my local Realtor body and to help set the course for the future. I say all this because you can still make a difference even if you are in the twilight of your career. My previous 36 years in the business is the foundation and a good background but the future is rapidly changing. I want my Association to be ready and relevant to today's members and those of the future.
There is apathy in the industry and a dislike for the Realtor® body. Some agents at the local level and across the country want no part of it and only belong to get access to the MLS. They poo-poo those that want to be involved. I believe there is more, so much more for the members and I look forward to sharing how our Association will benefit them.
We offer over 300 hours of free education each year. We have networking events and discounts offered to our Realtor® members. We help the community and make Clarksville a better place to live. We are ambassadors for our community and for the growth and quality of life we want. There are places for those members that want to serve to give back. Some just need to be asked like I was asked. My ship came in again and I am taking it this time.
The collective forces of our membership and leaders will be a positive influence on our Association and 2017 will be a good year for moving forward and setting the course for the future of the Association.
It is not too late to step up and lead, even when you are ready for Medicare. Do you have something to give? I am fulfilling my dream of becoming President. I am taking the ship.
