Ways to Burn Those Extra Holiday Calories

Tons of Extra Thanksgiving Calories Hanging with You?

That Thanksgiving Dinner and all the leftovers may have you feeling sluggish and heavy. There is a reason. The traditional holiday meal gives us 3000 to 5000 calories in just one sitting. This is 3 times the calories I need in a day and at least double what my husband should be eating.


We know this isn't particularly good for us so here are some suggestions from and that will help you get back to feeling good and burn some extra calories throughout the holiday season.

All of these will take moving your body and increasing your heart rate a bunch. These will burn off up to 4000 extra calories. Take smaller doses of these activities throughout the party season and you can keep your weight constant and feel better too.

  1. 7.5 hours of running
  2. 10 Hours swimming
  3. 7 hours of cycling at 12-14 miles an hour
  4. 7 hours of touch football
  5. 13 hours of walking at 3.5 mph
  6. 7 hours of swimming laps
  7. Almost 5 hours of jumping rope
  8. 12 hours of lifting weights
  9. 9 hours of vigorous dancing
  10. 19 hours of average intensity sex

This is over and above your the regular exercise you get. Maybe next year you may want to start a few weeks before Thanksgiving so you will have no guilt at the big meals. Continue your exercise routine and more throughout the holidays and beyond and you will be looking and feeling good into the New Year.

Good morning, Debbie Reynolds that list is very intimidating to most.... I did myself a favor and hit the gym on Thanksgiving morning.... I didn't eat anything I would not ordinarily eat, but it was part of my daily routine anyway....

Great suggestions, Debbie.  As I don't indulge in many of the most calorie-laden foods even on holidays, such as potatoes, gravy, stuffing, etc., I'm happy I can reduce those exercise levels a bit.

Debbie, for sure we went all out on that Thanksgiving Dinner, and time to get some exercise.  I cleaned up the rest of the leaves, mowed the yard (hopefully for the last time) and cleaned the garage out.

Debbie,  I fell off the work out wagon 2 years ago and cannot seem to get myself back on it.  I know it is important for health reasons ... I did not over eat on Thanksgiving ...yet I still need to exercise more.

I don't overeat on holidays but I do some significant training on a daily basis including my spin class this morning, a long walk, plus I hit the exercise ball this afternoon.
