Real Estate by Debbie Reynolds: Happy Birthday America! I Pledge Allegiance

Happy Birthday America! I Pledge Allegiance

Happy Independence Day

We are celebrating our country's independence. I am blessed to have been born here in America and grew up with the freedoms this country offers. To all our citizens, Happy Independence Day.

American Flag

In grade school, I learned to salute the flag and to say the pledge. It had not always been the pledge I recited. There was a history and I would like to share that history with you so when you say it, you will know the true meaning and how it evolved.

A Look at the Pledge of Allegiance

Did you know that the Pledge was written in 1892 by Francis Bellamy to be used in the patriotic opening ceremony celebrating Christopher Columbus's 400 year anniversary of arriving in America?

Did you know it was written for schoolchildren to say in schools and local ceremonies across the nation and he paid attention to its meaning and meter?

Did you know the accompanying first salute was a military salute that transitioned at the words to my Flag into an outstretched arm toward the flag with the palm turned upward?

Did you know that all the words we say today were not in the original Pledge? The original is as follows:

I pledge allegiance to my Flag

and the Republic for which it stands,

one nation indivisible,

with liberty and justice for all.

Did you know the salute changed to the right hand over the heart then after the words to my Flag the arm was outstretched toward the Flag palm down?

Did you know that in 1923 the words changed to "the Flag" and "of the United States" was added?

Did you know that in 1924 the words "of America" were added so immigrant children in America would not be confused?

Did you know that Congress formally adopted the Pledge in 1942 to the Flag Code?

Did you know that its official name "The Pledge of Allegiance" began in 1945?

did you know the salute changed to keeping the right hand resting over the heart throughout the entire pledge?

Did you know that in 1954 the words "under God" were added and signed into law?

Did you know there is no comma in the phrase n one nation under God so it should be said as one phrase, without pausing or taking a breath?

Today's Pledge:

I pledge allegiance to the Flag

of the United States of America,

and to the Republic for which it stands,

one nation under God, indivisible,

with liberty and justice for all.

Have a Safe and Happy Independence Day!

Wonderful post, Debbie! While I wasn't born in the USA I am so very proud to be a naturalized American and learned all the same lessons that you did about respecting our flag, saluting our flag, and being proud to say the Pledge of Allegiance. These are lessons I continue to take to heart and will all my life.

Debbie, I remember saying the pledge every morning and standing for it as well in school. It makes me sad that's no longer practiced. I didn't know all of the history you shared and enjoyed reading it. Happy 4th of July!

I do know that in 1954 Under God was added to the Pledge of Allegiance. Many children in my school objected to forced Christianity thrust upon us. Guess we were pretty novel back then.

Good morning Debbie - I certainly didn't know any of that.  Thank you for sharing it.  We should be teaching our children about this.

I definitely did not know all of that, but it sure does show how much the world we live in today has changed.

The Under God was added because of the Red Scare and McCarthyism. It was thought that this is how you knew someone was communist, they wouldn't say Under God.
